Inspired by iconic movie and television characters of all time, the MHAM Student Body slayed this year’s Acquaintance Party dubbed as MHAM La Soiree Cinema which was held at the IC3 Convention Center (formerly the International Eucharistic Congress Pavilion), Pope John Paul II Avenue in Mabolo, Cebu City last August 11, 2018.
Coming together with fun-filled characters portrayed not by hollywood actors but by themselves, the MHAM students from batches Insignis, Vitalis, Resiliere and Nexus were stunningly dressed up with their favorite film characters from heroes to villains.
An annual and one of the most anticipated events within the academic year, the acquaintance party was also a welcoming get-together for the first year and new students alike.
Started with a dinner and a serenade performed by the MHAM Acoustics, the ‘bring me’ delights facilitated by third year students, Sara Tamayo and Vincent Raven Sarande, added the amusement and fun that brought camaraderie and acquaintanceship with the MHAM way.
Ever committed with their singing and dancing prowess without the aid of seasons, the MHARMONY and MHAM Upbeat also rendered their finest performances that entirely blended with the night event.
This academic year, MHAM has a total of one thousand two hundred twenty (1,220) officially-enrolled aspiring doctors with four hundred nine (412) freshmen, two hundred sixty-two (262) sophomores, two hundred ninety-two (292) juniors and two hundred fifty-four (254) seniors, respectively.
Cheering for their bets to win for the title and crown, the MHAM students were sparkingly stirred with excitement for the coveted search for Mr. and Ms. MHAM 2018.
Last year, batch NEXUS roared in unison as Pat Hamilton Abella and Riza Mae Batoy were crowned as Mr. & Ms. MHAM 2017 with a sweet back-to-back winning moments being the over-all champion.
Hosted by television and events host, Ms. Phoebe Kaye Fernandez of ABS-CBN Cebu, this year’s La Soiree Cinema-themed night event was part of the 4-day MHAM Days Celebration in commemoration of the 111th founding anniversary.
For a 22-year old freshman and a graduate of BS in Biology, Juan Antonio Legaspi could not contain his excitement for being part of the acquaintance gathering among aspiring doctors especially that it it was his first time to attend the students’ anticipated affair of the year.
“I am very excited actually to be acquainted with everyone else especially that there are lots of sections this year compared with last year. Aside from the very accessible location that leads to a new learning environment I chose MHAM because I was inspired after seeing in the local newspaper that MHAM once again topped the board exam and that prompted me to be here”, Legaspi said in an interview.
Ever-supportive and dedicated to her deanship who redefines commitment is an act and not a word, Dr. Ma. Socorro Manaloto officially opened the MHAM Days Celebration in her welcome address with much delight.
“This acquaintance party is an annual thing especially for the new students. This should be the way to formally welcome the first year students and second, we will be having our Mr. and Ms. MHAM. I hope everybody would enjoy tonight and make some acquaintances. Thank for coming and let’s party”, said the College Dean.
While cheering, chanting names and carrying of banners for their class representatives soared in the air, the crowd went wild as the lovely candidates who were equally beautiful and talented slayed the night with their production number, school uniform, evening gown and formal suits.
This year, seven pairs vied for the titles wore the Disegno Dado creations, a Cebu-based apparel company owned by the mother-daughter designers, Angela Dado and Mara Dado.
Dazzling on the stage for the very first time, Effifany Glory Espinosa and Adrian Christian Libi who represented batch Insignes started the high energy that the crowd had brought as a sign of laudable support to the team.
Another pair, from batch Insignis brought the house with wild cheers as Jasprit Saini and Chris Vercide introduced themselves, who proudly represented the freshmen-future doctors.
Silently soaring as they hailed, Catherine Kaye Gonzaga and John Edward Calub added the yells and cheers coming from the audience. They competed for team Vitalis.
In addition, Nicole Rio Jaudian and Miguel Luis Aragon of batch Vitalis also charmed the vivacious audience during the competition.
Unwavering and confidently stunning throughout the night, Jennefer Espinosa and Patrick Daniel Lagarnia created such unstoppable cheers from their roaring supporters from batch Resiliere.
Carrying the best smiles coupled with confidence to give their very best, Katty Correos and Jejomar Wagas, also from batch Resiliere, wowed the crowd when their turn lit up the stage.
To complete, Julienne del Fierro and Adolf Marcus Roldan made the stage their own as they represented the medical clerks despite of the hectic clerkship period. Beaming with pride and esteem for being the two-time defending champions, the team Nexus, whom they represented had their loudest cheers.
As the crown and title are the symbol of beauty, wit, personality, responsibility, commitment and passion, Mr. and Ms. MHAM 2017 Pat Hamilton Abella and Riza Mae Batoy graced the stage with their elegant farewell walk along with their beautiful reign.
Bearing with both elegance and grace, Resiliere’s Jennefer Espinosa and Patrick Daniel Lagarnia were named Mr. & Ms. MHAM 2018. The new Ms. MHAM also brought home the Best in Uniform, Best in Long Gown and Miss Photogenic awards while this year’s Mr. MHAM Best also took the Best Production or Creative Attire, Best in Uniform and Best in Formal Wear.

As tallied, Catherine Kaye Gonzaga also bagged the People’s Choice Award for the females. Chosen by the official photographer at Circa 1900, this year’s Most Photogenic for the males was handed to Adrian Christian Libi.
Based from the official result, Adrian Christian Libi and Effifany Glory Espinosa of Insignis emerged as the 2nd runners up while Chris Vercide of Insignis and Katty Correos of Resiliere completed the awards being the 1st runners up.
Gracing this year’s Mr. and Ms. MHAM were the competent set of judges which include Cebu’s prince of fashion and 1st runner up of Project Runway Philippines Season 1, Mr. Philipp Tampus; Miss Cebu 2016, Gabriele Raine Abellana Baljak; MHAM alumna and College Registrar, Dr. Luditha Lumapat-Pe; MHAM alumna-faculty, Dr. Arn Evange Mendoza; and MHAM alumna and current College Dean, Dr. Ma. Socorro Manaloto who was also the Chairman of the board of judges.
The newly-crowned Mr. and Ms. MHAM 2018 will become the new ambassadors to the society especially for the upcoming search for Mr. and Ms. APMC Visayas 2018 which will be held in Dumaguete City.
Moreover, this year’s cinema-themed pageant night was well-supported by the MHAM Student Council led by its new and dynamic President, Bryan Jay Carlo Paña of batch Resiliere whose leadership made the event more colorful and successful.
“Actually I feel very pressured because of the set standard from the previous years but I feel honored together with the current officers for being part of tonight’s success and for the upcoming activities in celebration of the MHAM Days. Since most of us are new in our positions in the Student Council we need to step us with double pressure to rebuild the system and everything in the name of service and good governance”, Paña concluded.
An annual tradition that the MHAM Student Body truly carried to function better, both new and old, the MHAM La Soiree Cinema-Acquaintance Party ended with memories to behold for a lifetime. As a new acquaintance is like a new book that one can carry about, these future doctors are challenged to rebuild both strength and character for the next chapter of their medical journey towards a noble future. Nevertheless, they too, were the stars of the spotlight on that one, cinematic and captivating night. (Ana Liza Abao)
