2014 Pathologist of the Year Awardee Dr. Annette Laurente Salillas of the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Department once again attended another notable international meeting, this time, the 56th IAP Thailand Annual Meeting 2016 last November 2-4 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Practicing Anatomic and Clinical Pathology for 22 years now, Dr. Salillas presented an interesting case during the IAP Annual Meeting on metastatic tumor of a 49-year old male patient, a case in Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

A lone Interventional Cytopathologist in the country, she presented and delivered her paper entitled, “Metastatic Spermatic Cord Tumor presenting as an Inguinal Mass: A Case Report” during the said annual meeting.

“The objective of the case is to present an interesting case of metastatic tumor of the spermatic cord arising from a mucinous appendiceal adenocarcinoma of a 49-year old male patient in GCGMH. Although majority of inguinal hernias are benign, metastatic malignancy does occur and should be considered especially when the inguinal mass is associated with other symptoms such as RLQ pain and abdominal distention. Given the poor prognosis of a metastatic tumor, misdiagnosis can be avoided by doing imaging studies prior to surgery to improve patient survival”, said Dr. Salillas in an interview.

Participated by several pathologists in Asia, the Annual Meeting reechoed once again the growing importance of Cytopathology in the world. Twenty Filipino pathologists represented the country.

To recall, this 53-year old MHAM CM Professor and Chairman of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Department was the only Filipino known internationally during the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in Florida, USA.

A member of the International Academy of Cytology, Dr. Salillas globally represented the country for more than 19 years now.

Had it been on her contributions in cytology, she always took part of several notable international meetings which includes the International Cytology Congress (ICC) in 2004 in Santiago, Chile; European Cytology Congress (ECC) in 2005 in Paris, France; WASPaLM/RCPA Congress in 2009, Sydney, Australia and the International Academy of Pathology (IAP) Congress in 2012, Capetown, South Africa.

Reaping the notable harvest: 2014 Pathologist of the Year Award

Reaping the harvest of her several contributions, she was awarded as the 2014 Pathologist of the Year Award by the Philippine Society of Pathologist (PSP) during the PSP Annual Convention last 2015.

In February, 2006, Dr. Salillas was also being commended as one of the Outstanding Individual Award in the field of Medicine by the City of Cebu, driven by her expertise, passion and dedication to her chosen field.

A MHAM product herself, she was a consistent scholar throughout her Medical Technology degree and graduated as Cum Laude. Moreover, she was a recipient of the Warner Lambert Scholarship Award in Medicine conferred by the Philippine Medical Association as the Most Outstanding Medical Student when she graduated.

“It is not only enough for professors to impart their knowledge and experience to their students but what is important is to live through their own ideals by being the best they can be”, she concluded.
