MHAM September 2017 Physician Licensure Examination passers take the oath as new physicians

The new MHAM mavens of the field together with College Deans from different medical institutions, PRC and Board of Medicine officials and guests

The MHAM successful examinees of the September 2017 Physician Licensure Examination recently took the Hippocratic Oath during the Oathtaking Ceremonies of New Physicians at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino Lahug, Cebu City last November 3, 2017 in the afternoon.

Administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Regional Office and the Professional Regulatory Board of Medicine, the oathtaking ceremonies of new physicians marked another medical milestone to MHAM products who are now officially medical doctors, among others.

The participating medical institutions include Cebu Institute of Medicine, Cebu Doctors University, Vicente Gullas Memorial College of Medicine, SWU Phinma School of Medicine, Silliman University and MHAM College of Medicine, Inc.

Gracing the oathtaking ceremonies were Dr. Pureza T. Oñate as the keynote speaker; Chairman of the Philippine Board of Medicine, Dr. Clarita Corazon C. Out of forty-six MHAM September 2017 PLE passers, twenty new physicians have participated the oathtaking ceremonies and among them was Dr. Maria Eliza R. Zosa. Stunningly beautiful and feeling grateful in reaching her ultimate dream along with other batchmates from batch Solarium, this 29-year old lady doctor was a registered nurse by profession.

“This day is not just for me but to everyone who have been part of my medical journey. I am very happy and grateful to my family, to my Alma Mater and most of all to God who made all these things possible especially today, carrying the name of the school with that two letters that we aimed for”, said Dr. Zosa in an interview.

While the rest of the new doctors are faced up with the same question of what to do next towards their medical career, Dr. Liz, as she is fondly called, is planning to proceed into training with the noble commitment that the divine compassion for patients, to cure the ills of both body and spirit is a lifetime oath. “As of now I am thinking about Rehabilitation Medicine as it is an interesting field”, she added.

Meanwhile the current Medical Director of Perpetual Succour Hospital, Dr. Pureza Trinidad-Oñate gave her inspiring speech during her keynote address. As introduced by MHAM College Dean, Dr. Ma. Socorro Manaloto during the introduction of the keynote speaker, Dr. Oñate was trained in General Psychiatry and Child Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical Center, USA.

In her speech, she expressed her warmest compliments to the parents who have given the physical, psychological and financial support to their children to become what they want to be as doctors.

“To our new doctors, welcome to the noble profession of saving lives. Always remember why you are there because it is in this moment that you will find your strength and the will to move forward. Doubts are opportunity to learn and it is essential to be humble”, said Dr. Oñate.

This keynote speaker has also served being the former President of the ASEAN Federation of Psychiatry and Mental Health. In 1996, Dr. Oñate was also the President of the Cebu Medical Society which was awarded as the Most Outstanding Component Society of the Philippine medical Association during her term.

Currently she is the President of Cebu Newspaper-Workers Foundation and Cebu Press Council.

In addition, the much-awaited “Oath of Hippocrates” was led by the Board of Medicine Member, Dr. Eleonor J. Galvez while the Chairman of the Board of Medicine, Dr. Clarita C. Maaño led the Oath Of A Professional. As members of the medical profession, the new physicians solemnly pledged to dedicate their lives to the service of humanity at all times and places.

Ipong, Dr. Fritzie L. Jala, Dr. Marielle Zinna D. Lacaya, Dr. Jo William L. Lim, Dr. Jack A. Martinez, Dr. Joel John C. Mejos, Dr. Dev Luke Kalayaan O. Montenegro, Dr. Jaime Lois F. OIC Ms. Gina Emperado of the PRC Cebu Regional Office stated in her closing remarks that medical doctors must constantly remember the pledge to uphold the ethical standards of the medical professional with strong moral values, excellence and efficiency.

Moreover, Dr. John Paul de la Cruz, who was one of the active alumnus of batch Solarium expressed his signifying sentiments of the much-awaited event in his life as an official doctor. For him, the Physicians Oath is a lifetime commitment for a doctor like him who is now bound to be morally and ethically upright by all means.

“I am grateful that my mother who supported me to this journey have witnessed the signifying moment as I raised my hand and uphold the oath. She is the fire that burns from within, simply my strength and inspiration”, said Dr. De la Cruz.

A registered nurse by profession, this 28-year old MHAM alumnus is an academic achiever and a recipient of remarkable scientific awards during his studies. In 2014, he bagged the 1st place of the Oral Research Competition with his research title, “Peripheral Nerve-blocking Effect from Toothache Plant Flower: A Prospect Local Anesthetic Agent” during the 1st Regional Student Research Competition. A year after, his research was awarded as the Best in Poster Research during the 1st National Medical Student Research Competition spearheaded by the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges Student Network. Dr. JP, as he is fondly called, received another award in 2015 as his research, “Nephroprotective Activity of Virgin Coconut Oil on a Murine Model of Cisplatin-induced Intrinsic Acute Kidney Injury: A Dose and Time-dependent Trial” was chosen as the Best in Oral Research Competition during the 28th Annual Scientific Conference sponsored by the Philippine Association of Laboratory Animal Science. The same research was being presented and recognized being the Philippine Representative to the International Research Conference in Singapore during the 7th AFLAS Congress.

“Serving the underserved and underprivileged and taking advantage of my youth to go further into medical training and research and come back to our institution to give back and mold younger physicians are my topmost goals aside from my desire to become an Ob-gyne. I am amazed to how life begins- the first cry, the first breath, and the sacredness of life. Furthermore, with the advent of cancers such as in reproductive, I could go to Oncology to serve these patients and be an instrument to help save their lives”, he concluded.

WEAREMHAM: The Matias doctors of 2016

To date, majority of the batch Solarium are in preparation of the upcoming Physician Licensure Examination in March next year. Needless to say, these Matias doctors are now challenged to become globally competent by heart, embodied with the real meaning of being MHAM mavens of the field. (Ana Liza Abao)
