MHAM CM Research Director, Jose Micabalo Oclarit, PhD. DPAAB
As MHAM pursues sustainable and quality medical education over the years, another full time faculty member recently enrolled a 3-day course at the Institute for Functional Medicine in Los Angeles, California, USA last June 1 to 3, 2017.
The MHAM CM Research Director, Dr. Jose Micabalo Oclarit, was among the thousands of doctors, clinicians, scientists and practitioners worldwide who joined a conference on the new field of medical therapeutics with the theme, “The Dynamic Brain: Revealing the Potential of Neuroplasticity to Reverse Neurodegeneration”.
An eminent scientist and professor in the scientific community both here and abroad, this 59-year old Medical Physiology and Biochemistry professor specializes in Medical Biochemistry, Medical Physiology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy.
Designated as the MHAM CM Director for Research and the editor-in-chief of the MHAM Medical Research Journal, Dr. Oclarit is yet to enroll six more courses related to the new trends in the medical field for him to be able to obtain the diploma for Functional Medicine. Having been hired as a Consultant of the Institute of Bio-Integrative Medicine in the Philippines, he considers himself very lucky among faculty members with such opportunity to join the worldwide conference along with new learnings and insights in the medical field.

“Before it was believed that brain cannot regenerate but now it is evident that it can regenerate. There is what we call, Brain Derive Neurotrophic Factors (BDNF) and they are the ones that are capable of neuroplasticity. Thus, this is very relevant as I am teaching Neurophysiology and it changes with the new batch with its new concept”, said Dr. Oclarit in an interview.
He also added that the former belief among practitioners that neurons can no longer regenerate is no longer a mainstream, thus, neurons need to be trained again as they can regenerate.
“There are sets of neurons that can be reinforced or can be rewired because there are many duplicates as neurons that rewired together, fired together. The neuroplasticity there refers to the dynamic system of the brain or neuron that can be replaced. In other words, paralytic individuals with brain trauma or damage, alzheimer’s disease and heart stroke could be revived with high hope for recovery and live a normal life”, he added.

The Institute for Functional Medicine offers regular courses to medical practitioners in the world on the recent trends in the medical field. Largely, most of the diseases can be intervened using nutritional intervention because the practice of medicine is changing from conventional to holistic and functional medicine which is not based on drugs, but on nutrition. The concept of replaceable neurons is indeed a medical breakthrough that practitioners must adhere to because it is scientifically evidence-based.

On the other hand, having been obtained his PhD in Applied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Hiroshima University, Hiroshima City, Japan, Dr. Oclarit’s educational attainment led him to engage on researches and discoveries as he is passionate into. In 1996, he was a recipient of an honorific award as one of the Outstanding Young Scientists of the Philippines in the area of Applied Biochemistry by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), an affiliated institution in Royal Society of London, England.

Dr. Jose Micabalo Oclarit: Listed as WHO’S WHO IN THE WORLD
With the highest collegial academic body here in the Philippines for his outstanding contribution in the world of science, he was recognized as a pre-eminent scientist as he was then listed as one of the Who’s Who In The World since 1996 up to present. The world has also recognized him as top Marine Biotechnologist in the Philippines along with another scientist at the University of the Philippines.
In addition, this Research Director had been remarkably invited as international speaker of various international symposia abroad in the field of biomedical sciences and biotechnology. To signify his trips abroad, he had been lecturing several times in Netherlands, Spain, Scotland, Germany, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, United States of America, Bangladesh, Hongkong, Singapore, United Arab Emirates and Africa.
To date, Dr. Oclarit has just completed the second volume of the MHAM CM Medical Research Journal for Basic and Clinical Sciences, an annual Research Publication which he authored.
As nutrition is now a big factor for the Functional Medicine, the new trend is also very significant in line with the thrust of the MHAM CM successor-educator, Mrs. Elma Aznar-Sierra, who intends to offer Doctor of Nutritional Medicine in the future. (Ana Liza Abao)
