According to this eminent scientist and professor in the scientific community both here and abroad, research is the hallmark of an academic institution or in the institution of higher learning. Without research an institution cannot be called a university or college but unlike other medical institutions in Cebu City, MHAM has an established Research Department with a full-time Research Director. So far, MHAM has produced two medical journals which are accessible online and is still trying to build up into a higher level.

“Our in-house research which is reviewed by the local reviewers is proud to present and publicize our output through the medical journals and we hope to have our journals per reviewed by international reviewers in the near future. However, we are building up to a higher level as we will put up a high level of equipment for isolation pharmacological substance known as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HDLC) which isolates molecules and can quantify even minute amounts”, said Dr. Oclarit in an interview.

With its intent to publicize the output of the students’ researches who qualified the specific standards, the Research Department welcomes reviews on topics of wide interest to investigators in the medical sciences and should be written at a level accessible to readers who are interested in the research. Submission of focused reviews is distinctly encouraged.

Having been listed as one of the Who’s Who In The World since 1996 up to present, Dr. Oclarit was also awarded as the most Outstanding Researcher in Industry and Energy by the Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research & Development in year 2000 for his discovery of an anti-tuberculosis drug from a marine organism. Moreover, he earned numerous other awards and scientific publications in science and technology over the last thirty years with his craftsmanship in the national and international journals and several papers.

Two years ago, the MHAM student-researchers emerged as champion during the regional medical research competition and bagged the 4th place in the national competition. Last year, MHAM made it again on the 1st and 3rd places in the regional level and placed 5th in the national level. This year, the screening is still on the process.

Having been engaged into researches and discoveries with honorific awards as he is known for, Dr. Oclarit also added that scientific and community researches are the two pre-screened and pre-reviewed categories for research competitions.

For animal studies or experimental animal research as MHAM is always categorized at, it shall pass through the approval of the Institutional Animal Care And Use Committee (IACOC) as mandated by law. Luckily, among the medical institutions in Cebu City, only MHAM and CDU are under IACOC approval.

“In so far as research is concern among medical schools, MHAM can be leveled in the national level aside from being constant winners in both regional and national research competitions. We hope to upgrade our journals be reviewed by international reviewers although it is indeed strenuous”, concluded this 59-year old Medical Physiology and Biochemistry professor.

To help students facilitate for an easy submission of research papers, they can easily access the link for the guidelines through the MHAM CM website’s Research Portal. As required, submission of a paper shall be held to imply that the manuscript contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere.
