MHAM rewards board placer in the March 2018 Physician Licensure Examination

As another year, another blessing and another topnotcher made MHAM trended on news portals after the official results in the March 2018 Physician Licensure Examination were released, this year’s 2nd placer, Dr. Jay Ruyeras Orehuela received a reward for the honor he had given to his Alma Mater at the President’s Room last March 23, 2018 in the afternoon.

Represented by the Board of Trustee, Mr. Victorio Aznar Sierra; Assistant Dean for Basic Sciences, Dr. Allan Librando; VP for Aademics, Dr. Arlene Diaz; Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Ma. Socorro Manaloto; College Registrar, Dr. Luditha Lumapat-Pe; and HR Director, Mr. Pedro Pañares, a reward check worth ninety percent (90%) from his total tuition fee was handed to Dr. Orehuela for the glory he had given back to the institution that molded his medical journey with competence and dedication. The feat, for four consecutive years, have showed consistency in producing five topnotchers in the Physician Licensure Examinations since MHAM has acquired a distinct and separate juridical identity amended by law.

The SEC approval marks the end of the confusing distinction between MHAM and SWU since the former had separated from the latter in 2013.

Established with its strength in keeping a roster of dedicated faculty members for quite long years, MHAM takes pride of its graduate-scholars who never failed to give back the honor by garnering the exemplary ratings among the thousands of examinees nationwide.

In behalf of the Sierra family, MHAM Board of Trustee, Mr. Victorio Aznar Sierra in an interview said that keeping good people in MHAM is indeed an asset of the institution. He also cited that the need of constant upgrading among faculty members through seminars and conventions is a compelling investment towards a long term success and for a better MHAM.

“We are grateful for the many years of having good faculty members and management in MHAM. We are proud to have excellent line-up of faculty and the credit goes to them”, Sierra said.

Being the youngest among the heirs of the Sierra family, he added that having a topnotcher this year was something that he had been expecting to occur as big news.

“Every year we always expect the best just like Jay knowing that there is always that somebody in a group who can rise up the banner for excellence”, he added.

Looking back, MHAM has produced board placers from its graduate-scholars under the MHAM Scholars Society, namely: 2015 1st placer, Dr. Venil Lovely Bolambao; 2016 1st placer, Dr. Al Patrick Alajas; 2016 9th placer, Dr. Francine Diloy; and 2017 4th placer, Dr. Maude Tabigue. This year, Dr. Jay Orehuela made history as he added the line-up of competent scholar-graduates.

Through the years, MHAM offers free medical education to deserving students with its pursuit to continue to provide professional advancement with ethical standards of medical education, responsive to the current health needs in local and global community.

This school year, the MHAM Committee on Scholarship takes pride of its seventeen (17) freshmen student-recipients of Don Matias H. Aznar Scholarship (DMAS) with latin honors who are currently enjoying full tuition excluding miscellaneous and other fees. In addition, three recipients under the MHAM Alumni Scholarship (MAS) grant also enjoyed the same privilege with its continuous effort to cater sufficient assistance to deserving students in keeping the founder’s legacy over the years.

Having been rewarded from his hard work and determination to make it to the top, Dr. Orehuela in a separate interview said that he is forever grateful to the very institution who provided him the privilege to become a full-pledged physician.

Interview with this year’s 2nd placer in the March 2018 PLE, Dr. Jay R. Orehuela…

“I’ve always been grateful to MHAM and I always said this time and again that I’ve always been indebted to the school because only a few institutions in the Philippines who provide free medical education to aspiring doctors”, he added.

A well-read and diligent reader not just during his studies but for a lifetime, this former Matias scholar highlighted the importance of reading for an examinee’s success.

“I think one word of advice that I can impart to our medical students to do well in the exam is to read which is the fundamental because most of the questions in the exam comes from the very books that we’ve read in med school. Students should learn to value the culture that is grounded on diligent reading”, Dr. Orehuela concluded.

This consistent achiever at present is planning to visit his sister outside the country aside from his goal to pursue on the opening of the Residency Program for Internal Medicine either in Chong Hua Hospital or at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in Manila in due time.

With a rating of 88.00%, Dr. Orehuela was among the 1,067 passers out of 1,601 examinees in the recent PLE. A full scholar recipient under the founder’s scholarship grant, he finished Doctor of Medicine in 2015 as Magna Cum Laude.

Gearing towards its preparation in its intent to offer four additional degree programs for the next academic year, MHAM is now on the verge of transferring to the new ten-storey building in honor of the late founder, Matias Hipolito Chavez Aznar II in Banawa, Cebu City with state-of-the-art school facilities and a conducive place of learning.
