From MHAM to Malaysia: MHAM Research Director, Dr. Jose Micabalo Oclarit together with other medical practitioners in Asia
In his relentless effort to keep updated with the latest and newest breakthrough in the field of medicine, the MHAM Research Director, Dr. Jose M. Oclarit graced the seminar and workshop on stem cell therapy at the Asian Headquarters in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia last September 24 to 26, 2017.

Having been known as one of the experts in cellular therapy, this eminent scientist and professor who just turned sixty was invited by the European Wellness Center to grace the 3-day seminar and deliberated as part of the active participants among other medical practitioners in Asia.
In a recent interview with this MHAM Medical Physiology and Biochemistry professor, Dr. Oclarit divulged that the highlight of the event was the theories and application of stem cell in regenerative and anti-aging medicine that has become the latest cutting edge therapeutics in the present times.
“Driven by the school’s support which is subject to the president’s decision, I am planning to put up a Stem Cell Research Center here in MHAM and we will do the stem cell extraction and do research once the stem cell therapy is already accredited in the country”, said Dr. Oclarit.
This highly-regarded and active researcher on stem cell also reiterated that although stem cell is already accepted worldwide, the Department Of Health allows stem cell research but not extensive in terms of disease interventions because it is still limited in the Philippines and is not yet open to the public at present.

In addition, the MF Plus Professional workshop encompassing In-house Product Training and Medical Team Technical Talk was facilitated by the Stellar Biomolecular Research Center to the attending medical practitioners which include ten doctors from Taiwan, one from Hongkong, twelve from the Philippine Academy of Medical Specialists (PAMS) and Dr. Oclarit as the lone scientist outside Manila.

When intensive expertise and thorough explanation are rolled into one…
“Actually the stem cell has been accepted worldwide and has been distributing the stems cells all throughout the world. The most commonly used are rabbits since human beings do have limitations because for one dosage it needs sixty fetuses. In order to be successful to stem cell, it has to be highly regulated as in the source of animal stem cells such as in the Europe, US, Germany, among others. Right now animal stem cells are the best source because it is easy to harvest body parts. Thus, the source of animal cell culture must be axenic and certified no diseases and no virus”, he concluded.

Into the age of Stem Cell Therapy
While scientists have explored and developed the new uses of these stem cells, this MHAM Research Director thoroughly explained that the posing question on how affective is the kidney cells of rabbits to humans is indeed effective in the sense that rabbits are mammals and humans are mammals. In terms of growth factors and development of stem cells they are just the same, except the genes. Even if the numbers of chromosomes are different but the growth factors are the same. Thus, the stem cells of other animals can be used as a raw material for the repair of human kidney.

Stem cell advocates…
One of the highlights during the Nexgen Biopharma Technical and product workshop was Dr. Oclarit’s valuable contribution in helping its medical scientist and head of the Medical Advisory, Dr. Dmitry Klokol, in explaining the stem cell therapy to the attending doctors. As an active stem cell therapy, the former’s intensive expertise and thorough explanation have prompted the company to hire him as one of their scientists and is subject to agreement if the price is right. The Nexgen Biopharma’s main laboratory is located in Switzerland but the storage area is stationed in Malaysia.

As MHAM is projected to be a leading institution for medical research in Visayas and Mindanao, the proposed MHAM Stem Cell Research Center which is still subject to the President’s verdict will become beneficial to the society with its expertise on possible uses, ethical issues and practices towards a great promise for new medical treatments.

Eminent scientist and MHAM Medical Physiology and Biochemistry professor, Dr. Jose M. Oclarit…
With the renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat serious diseases through the stem cell therapy, today, these cells are such a powerful tool for treatment worldwide. As quoted from by the American Society of Gene and Cellular Therapy, “Scientists have engineered human immune cells that can precisely located diseased cells anywhere in the body and execute a wide range of customized responses”. If favorably accepted and decided, the Stem Cell Research Center which is soon-to-be in MHAM with regulated and potentially-safe environment will bring regenerative medicine research and development very accessible to the great masses outside Manila.
