In fostering quality education through social responsibility in the medical field, the MHAM CM strengthened its ties with Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center as the VSMMC-MHAM COLLEGE OF MEDICINE PERINATAL CENTER was finally inaugurated and was graced by no less than the Department Of Health (DOH) Secretary Dr. Paulyn Jean B. Rossel-Ubial at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center last August 26, 2017 in the afternoon.
Led by the DOH Secretary as the main guest, the blessing and inauguration ceremonies of the 3-storey building of VSMMC-MHAM COLLEGE OF MEDICINE PERINATAL CENTER finally took placed after a Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) between VSMMC and MHAM was signed last August 13, 2014 represented by the VSMMC Chief of hospital, Dr. Gerardo Aquino Jr. and MHAM CM President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Elma Aznar-Sierra and VP for Academics, Dr. Arlene M. Diaz who was still the College Dean at that time.

Having been recently appointed by the Commission on Appointment as the Chief of DOH, Dr. Paulyn Jean B. Rossel-Ubial also graced the ribbon cutting and blessing ceremonies of the other two structures of VSMMC; the new laboratory and the newly-renovated Out-Patient Department (OPD) buildings.

In her speech, the DOH Secretary said that in line with the Philippine Health Agenda’s tagline, “All for health towards health for all”, VSMMC is now a model medical institution in the Visayas region because of the new facilities.

Prescribed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to be complied by all medical institutions in the country, MHAM is committing to VSMMC as the former is in need of a Base Hospital where its medical students can undertake training under the CHED regulations.

The VSMMC has agreed to serve as Base Hospital and shall open all necessary facilities to MHAM in the achievement of its goals.

“The blessing is actually making our partnership with VSMMC public. As an obstetrics and gynecology specialist, this allows better service to our patients and as a dean it brings more opportunities to our students, for learning and service through a partnership between MHAM CM and VSMMC which is our base hospital”, said Dr. Manaloto.

As the VSMMC agrees to allow the MHAM medical students to be trained in the VSMMC premises with VSMMC’s Chief Training Officer, Dr. Celia M. Mabalatan, MHAM will not allow their students to report to VSMMC without the presence of the clinical instructor and/or preceptor who shall supervise and accompany each student while the latter are within the premises of the VSMMC at all times, as part of the agreement in the training program.

As agreed, clinical subjects on Physical Diagnosis for the second year, junior clerkship for the third year and senior clerkship for the fourth year students are subject to the requirement for a Base Hospital.

With the Perinatal Center at its completion towards the forthcoming turnover ceremony, the VSMMC as a government hospital with lots of patients becomes an advantage for MHAM student-clerks with its opportunity to not to wrestled to for possible patients.

Meanwhile, VSMMC Chief of hospital, Dr. Gerardo Aquino Jr., in his speech said that with the new facilities the public may avail the services regardless of socio-economic status including those healthy people who can seek wellness to avoid illness. He also acknowledged and expressed their gratitude to MHAM CM for donating the Perinatal Center. A certificate of recognition to MHAM CM was delightfully received by Dr. Manaloto in behalf of MHAM.
“It is my privilege to welcome all of you here on this memorable day of our hospital, the blessing of our new buildings and this marks another milestone of Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center. It is indeed a historical achievement”, said Dr. Aquino in his welcome remarks.
At present, Dr. Aquino’s two children who are MHAM students are also following his path in the medical field.

Moreover, the term of the agreement between the VSMMC and MHAM CM shall be fifteen (15) years commencing from August 13, 2014 and will be expiring on August 12, 2029 with the option to renew by both parties under the mutually agreed conditions.
