Every parent finds joy in their children and there is no greater joy than to see them succeed. The overwhelming pride and among the most common joyful times for parents is when each child reaches his or her dreams and shares the success on graduation day. For parents, raising a child to be successful and to become a functioning adult is the greatest joy of all.

This academic school year, two hundred nine MHAM CM graduates known as Batch Elixir, has finally reached their goals and dreams of becoming physicians. Each of them has a different story to tell, from a mere simple dream to a more compelling achievement. To name a very few, they shared their profound success not just to their immediate families but to all of those who get inspired from their accomplishments with stories behind each triumph. This time, two alumni-siblings, who, through thick and thin, have completed their medical feat and have marched together on their graduation day, marking the 67th Investiture and Commencement Exercises far-reaching and noteworthy. Among them are the Martinquilla siblings from Guadalupe, Cebu City.

Unknown to many, 30-year old Dr. Andrew Valaquio Martinquilla and 25-year old Dr. Carla Mae Valaquio Martinquilla both graduated BS in Nursing as a pre-medical degree before stepping up into the portals of their Alma Mater. Their parents, Mr. Andryll V. Martinquilla and Mrs. Ma. Cherryl V. Martinquilla, have supported them in all aspects especially in achieving their goals and dreams.

Mother feels best: Mrs. Ma. Cherryl V. Martinquilla in an interview

In an interview with their mother, Mrs. Ma. Cherryl V. Martinquilla, who joyfully shed tears on her children’s graduation day, she shared that there is no amount of words that can truly define how happy they are as parents.

“Words cannot suffice how happy I am today as a parent who only wishes to give the best education to my children. I am very happy because despite of the difficulties and struggles we have encountered, they made it to the end. It’s worth the wait, and I am looking forward for another feat to come, for the Physician Licensure Examination. Truly, there is so much to thank for and to count such blessings”, said Mrs. Martinquilla with joyful tears.

A Dubai-based Business Management Consultant who used to come home every year, this joyful mother also shared that three of her four children are registered nurses, while the other one will be pursuing into a Law school. Her spouse is a retired Mechanical Engineer by profession.

Both of the Valaquio and Martinquilla sides are family of doctors.

Meanwhile, another proud family who come from family of doctors in Ipil, Sibugay, Zamboanga, is the Babiera famiIy, who also shared the same joyful moments during the 67th Investiture and Commencement Exercises.

Engr. Ernesto Jose C. Babiera and Dr. Mona Lisa M. Babiera Dr. Ernesto could not contain their joy as their son, Dr. Jose Maturan Babiera II and daughter, Dr. Lysa Marie Ernestine Maturan Babiera were among the Batch Elixir graduates who, at last, have realized their dreams. Both of them took up Nursing as a pre-medical degree.

“I am very happy and very grateful to God for their success and in reaching another phase of their lives. As parents, happiness is very well-defined on this wonderful occasion”, said Engr. Babiera with a huge smile.

Parents’ Pride

Having been blessed with four children, the Babiera couple was also beaming with pride for having been witnessed the hard work and dedication to the new doctors in the clan.

“I salute to my children for being responsible and dedicated in reaching their goals amidst challenges, because no matter how the parents have exerted all the effort and resources just to give them the best education, if they won’t cooperate, it is just fruitless”, said Dr. Babiera in a joint interview.

Just like the Martinquilla couple, the Babieras, beaming with pride and fulfillment, took turns on the stage during the hooding ceremony, witnessed by other proud parents and family members.

For Dr. Lysa Marie Ernestine M. Babiera, there is so much she ought to give thanks especially to God for having been accomplished the most coveted degree.

“I feel relieved. The last four years have not been easy and I am nothing but blessed to have these accomplishments under my belt. I am still at a loss why I started but why I continued is because of the people I owed my service to. I have no definite plans as of now but since junior clerkship I’ve had my eye on Neonatology”, said Dr. Babiera.

Moving forward upon realizing their goals as siblings, they will always be their parents’ pride wherever they may be in life. To date, these MHAM alumni-siblings are preparing for the Physician Licensure Examination along with their future goals and plans in the mission field. (Ana Liza Abao)
