MHAM College Dean goes Singapore for Simulation Instructor Course

In its continuous quest to produce world-class doctor-instructors throughout the years, another MHAM faculty went across the country to participate an instructor course at the National University of Singapore (NUS) last May 15 to 18, 2017.

The newly-appointed MHAM CM College Dean, Dr. Ma. Socorro Manaloto, was among the twenty-one medical instructors who participated the “Simulation as a Teaching Tool: Instructor Course” workshop at the NUS, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

Organized by the NUS Centre for Healthcare Simulation and the Center for Medical Simulation, Boston, USA, the 4-day intensive immersion course in healthcare simulation was led by experienced Harvard-affiliated faculty, whose expertise in running a simulation program is highly-leveled.

Looking forward to implement the acquired learning, Dr. Manaloto, who also visited NUS last February this year for the Simulation Faculty Development Workshop, was the only Filipino doctor-faculty who joined the instructor course.

Interview with the newly-appointed College Dean, Dr. Ma. Socorro Manaloto…

“The trip and the course were really worth it. I learned many things, not only on the theoretical side but the actual activities also attributed its significance and relevance towards simulation as a teaching tool. It taught me on how to apply simulation to our educational system and to be able to apply the theories on how to deal with the faculty and students, how to administer, how to debrief, how to give feedback and how to create scenarios”, said Dr. Manaloto in an interview.

Operating and creating a challenging and safe learning environment simulation program were among the topics of the entire course whose participants are expected to join a growing international community of Institute of Medical Simulation (IMS) graduates positioned to be leaders of the field. Other topics includes teaching clinical decision making, teamwork and crisis resource management skills; developing debriefing skills; preparing, building, conducting and debriefing realistic simulation scenarios; introducing behavioral and educational research paradigms; and advancing simulation within one’s institution.

A diplomate of the Philippine Board of OB-GYN (PBOG) and a fellow of the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, Dr. Manaloto also stated that simulated scenarios that were as realistic with current technology were given emphasis during the Harvard-led simulation course. This MHAM alumna-faculty also added that theoretically, the methods of instruction and learning guide the instructors to help the participants to be clear about what is expected of them and helps them understand the benefits and limits of the simulated clinical setting. Thus, the instructor makes plain that the focus is on learning and creates and environment where participants feel safe in sharing thoughts and feelings about the upcoming simulation and debriefing without being humiliated, as most cases are.

The IMS Simulation Course is meant for trained healthcare educators with simulation training to bring them to the next level of incorporating simulation into their curricula.

Receiving the certificate of appreciation…

Harvard Medical School faculty-experts, Dr. Daniel Raemer and Dr. Janice Palaganas led the entire simulation course together with the NUS’ Director of the Centre for Healthcare Simulation, Dr. Suresh Pillai.

Dr. Manaloto was one of the five MHAM employees who visited NUS last year for Skills Laboratory and Simulation Center benchmarking.

The simulation as a teaching tool course will eventually be incorporated in establishing the MHAM CM Sim CITTI (Simulation Center for Integrated Teaching and Training Innovation) which will be put up at the new building in Banawa, Cebu City. (Ana Liza Abao)
