MHAM Alumnus receives award as Cebu City’s Outstanding Individual

OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL IN THE CITY OF CEBU: MHAM Board of Trustees Corporate Treasurer, Dr. Carlito L. Astillero, FPSMID, FASCP, PAFP

Another MHAM alumnus received a prestigious recognition conferred by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña being an Outstanding Individual in the City of Cebu, last February 24, 2017 at the Grand Convention Center of Cebu.

MHAM Board of Trustees Corporate Treasurer, Dr. Carlito L. Astillero, was among the Cebu City awardees on the occasion of the 80th Cebu City Charter Day Anniversary. His indebted contribution and deep commitment in promoting quality medical education and for having been organized the MHAM College of Medicine Multipurpose Cooperative for the benefit of the employees made him an Outstanding Individual, along with other Cebuano awardees.

It was not the very first time that this Class 1968 graduate had been honored for his exemplary contributions to the society, aside from being a dedicated MHAM employee for eleven years now. In September 2011, Dr. Astillero was chosen to receive both the Regional and the National Most Outstanding Family of the Year Award for being the Model OFW Family of the Year conferred by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

“I am deeply honored for being recognized by a reputable government entity as one of the Mayor’s Special Awardee in the City of Cebu. Having been recognized as the founder of the MHAM Employees Multipurpose Cooperative together with our recognized  vision and mission to upgrade standard medical education, we appreciate this honor given to us by the Cebu City Government. Moreover, we go forward in our endeavors especially in managing the Multipurpose Cooperative with honesty and integrity”, said Dr. Astillero.

Married to a medical technologist, Ma. Elena Clador Astillero, this Class ’68 alumnus has been blessed with five children where two of them followed his career as medical doctors, one lawyer, one engineer and one nurse, respectively.

To complete his life’s fulfilling moments, Dr. Astillero has earned several exemplary achievements and awards which includes; 2011 Outstanding Balikbayan Reputation Awardee, 2011 Regional and National Model OFW Family of the Year, 1996 Elected Honored Member of Who’s Who in the World of Professionals, 1996 Special Presidential Awardee given by Pres. Fidel V. Ramos, 1994 Most Outstanding Contract Worker Awardee given by Pres. Fidel V. Ramos, 1992 Bagong Bayani Awardee given by Pres. Corazon C. Aquino, 1990 Most Outstanding Filipino, 1970 Work Well Done Citation by the Cebu City Police Department and 1968 Board of Physicians Topnotcher as 9th placer.

In December 13, 2012, the MHAM Employees Multipurpose Cooperative was conceived as he initiated its mission to sustain as a cornerstone of the cooperative’s multi-financial services. Two years later, the Multipurpose Cooperative became operational, designed as a cooperatively-owned enterprise addressing the needs of the members and their families in the next decade.

At present, there are ninety-eight active coop members who were benefited from its mission.

This year’s Outstanding Individual in the City of Cebu awardee has been dedicating his life into years of service in various areas, here and abroad. His socio-civic activities as his legacy had paved the way to received both regional and national awards. Prior to his service as President of the MHAM Multipurpose Cooperative, Dr. Astillero was then the Chairman of the Bar International Multipurpose Cooperative (BIMPCO) for thirteen years in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

To date, at the age of seventy-six, Dr. Astillero is actively dedicating his commitments as the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees and the President of the Multipurpose Cooperative in which he founded. His message summarizes his gratitude to the Almighty who have given him the strength and courage to fulfill his mission wherever he may be. “There is so much I ought to give thanks to God who filled my life with marvelous blessings and to be among those who never cease to give Him glory throughout the ages. To my MHAM family where my heart belongs, this meritorious achievement is dedicated to all of us who continue to be bearers of hope in our commitment as community-oriented mavens of the field. In unison, let us ignite and uphold our name as WEAREMHAM, yesterday, today and forever. To my beloved family who serves my inspiration and strength, my love will always be with you without the aid of seasons. Above all, my gratitude goes to the City of Cebu who continues to believe in me and in my endeavors, and to the entire community, we proudly say we are Cebuanos.”

In keeping the goals to uplift the socio economic and spiritual well being of members, to provide quality services in response to the members’ needs and to seek ways and means in achieving inclusive development, the MHAM Multipurpose Cooperative will soon provide another service which can be availed by all students. “Students can soon apply for financial loans, should they will be facing financial difficulties in the future”, he concluded.

Through the years, inheriting the pride of being MHAM products continued to soar, aside from producing topnotchers and achievers in the medical field. Like Dr. Astillero, their contributions and achievements can become an inspiration to all aspiring physicians, who will soon proudly say, WEAREMHAM! (Ana Liza Abao)
